Chiropractic is a licensed health care profession that emphasizes the body’s ability to heal itself. Treatment typically involves manual therapy, often including spinal manipulation. Other forms of treatment, such as exercise and nutritional counseling, may be used as well.

Chiropractors approach patient care in a manner similar to that used in conventional medicine. They interview the patient, obtain a detailed health history, perform an examination, do tests, and develop a working diagnosis. They then develop a management plan, start treatment, and monitor the patient’s progress. Chiropractors  treat problems related to the musculoskeletal system.

What Chiropractors Do

The manual treatment methods used by chiropractors range from stretching and sustained pressure to specific joint manipulations, which are usually delivered by hand and involve a quick and gentle thrust. The purpose of the manipulations is to improve joint motion and function.

The purpose of the joint manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force to joints that have lost their normal movement as a result of an injury, a sustained abnormal pressure, the effects of aging or even sleeping wrong. These treatments improve joint function, help to relieve acute pain symptoms, reduce muscle tightness, and eliminate soft tissue adhesions.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Joint injuries can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as the force of an automobile accident, an awkward slip, and fall, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time.

If these injuries and joint restrictions are not treated by a skilled chiropractor, the tissue that connects to these joint structures become extremely taut creating adhesions known as trigger points. In addition, because the joint itself is restricted in its range of motion, the fluid that hydrates the region is not able to properly lubricate the structure, this allows arthritis to set in overtime which increases pain to the area.
